Winning influence: 2011 was a great year for the Cardinals, and winning the World Series was the perfect inspiration for an exciting design assignment: the Cardinals 2012 media credentials. Each year, we design a custom series of credentials for the team. This season featured action-orientated images of Cardinals star players: starting pitcher, Chris Carpenter; catcher, Yadier Molina; third-baseman, David Freese; and closer, Jason Mott.
Design solution
Method: Posterization vector art (Posterization is an effect that uses a limited color palette or range of tones. A posterized image does not have subtle gradients, continuous tones, or smooth transitions from one color to the next.) We began by converting player photos into vector illustrations using Adobe Illustrator’s Live Trace feature. Then, we tweaked the illustrations by adjusting the vector points, lines, and color details.
Bold, action-orientated colors made the credential cards pop. We added the STL logo as ghosted background for additional branding. We also created a consistent header with the Cardinals logo at the top and a mixture of typefaces – Caxton (serif) and Futura (san serif) – for media information.
The final layouts were winners. Nehmen-Kodner is very proud to be playing a part in the colorful history of the Cardinals brand.
